Google Photos digital photo frame on Android

Google Photos is where most people store their photos. If you want those photos displayed on a dedicated frame in your home, you don't need to buy proprietary hardware. An Android tablet running the right app can act as a full Google Photos digital photo frame — with slideshow scheduling, weather overlays, and offline caching.

• A Google account with photos in Google Photos
• A frame app that connects to Google Photos (Fravora uses the official Google Photos Picker API)

How connecting Google Photos actually works

Most Google Photos integrations on Android use the official Google Photos Picker, which lets you hand-pick the specific photos or albums you want on the frame. The app downloads and caches those picks locally on the device. This approach respects Google's API limits and keeps your full photo library private — the app only ever sees what you explicitly selected.

Once downloaded, the slideshow runs entirely from the device cache. You don't need a live internet connection for the photos to display. The frame only needs internet when you add new picks or the app re-syncs to check for updates.

Setup: what the onboarding covers

When you first launch Fravora, the onboarding guides you through the full setup. Here is what it covers for a Google Photos frame:

1. Choose Google Photos as your source type.
2. The Google Photos Picker opens. Select the photos or albums you want on the frame and confirm.
3. Name your album and assign the Google Photos source to it.
4. The frame begins downloading your picks and starts the slideshow — setup is done.

To add more Google Photos connections, other cloud sources, or local/NAS folders later, go to Settings → Sources.

Managing your photo picks

You can add more photos to an existing pick set without starting over — just tap Pick Now from the album source row to open the Picker again and append new selections. To remove all picks for a connection and start fresh, use the Clear Picked Photos action on the source.

Photos you have hidden on the frame are protected during re-import — if a pick was previously hidden, it stays excluded even after a resync.

Storage and caching

Google Photos picks are stored in a dedicated cache folder, separate from the regular image cache, so they are not evicted when other images cycle through. You can configure a minimum storage headroom (from 256 MB up to 32 GB depending on your device) to ensure the device never runs out of space. If space gets critically low, the app prunes the oldest picks automatically.

The regular image cache is configurable from 128 MB to 2 GB. If your device has limited storage, keep the cache smaller and let the app re-download photos as needed.

Mixing Google Photos with other sources

You are not limited to Google Photos only. A single album can combine Google Photos picks with local device folders and NAS/SMB network shares. This is useful if you keep older photos on a home server and newer ones in Google Photos — both play together in the same slideshow rotation.

Scheduling and standby

Set running hours so the frame only displays photos during the times you are home and awake. Outside those hours the screen shows a standby clock or goes fully black, and the device stays tappable so you can open the menu anytime. A bouncing standby clock is available on PRO to prevent OLED burn-in.
