Voice-controlled digital photo frame on Android: what works and what to expect
A frame mounted on a kitchen wall or across the living room is inconvenient to interact with physically. Voice commands let you skip a photo, pause audio, or adjust the volume without walking over to the device. Fravora supports wake-word voice control on any Android tablet as a PRO feature — but it is important to understand what it can and cannot do before you set your expectations.
The honest mic limitation: this is not Alexa
Fravora's voice control uses the tablet's built-in microphone, which is designed for video calls and voice memos at close range — not for far-field pickup across a room. It is not comparable to an Amazon Echo, Google Nest, or any purpose-built smart speaker. In a quiet room at a reasonable distance (a few metres) it works well. In a noisy environment or from the other side of a large room, recognition will be unreliable.
With that framing set: for the right use case — a kitchen frame at counter distance, a bedroom frame you address from the bed, or a hallway frame you pass close to — voice control is a genuine convenience. It covers the moments where your hands are busy or you do not want to walk over to the device. It does not replace a smart speaker.
What commands are available
After saying the wake phrase, Fravora listens for a command for 3 to 7 seconds (configurable). Available command categories:
- Slideshow: "play slideshow", "pause slideshow", "stop slideshow" — and many equivalent phrasings
- Radio and music: "play radio", "stop radio", "play music", "pause music" — and many equivalent phrasings. If no station is saved yet, the app opens the radio search automatically
- Volume: "increase volume", "lower volume", "set volume to 50", "mute", "unmute" — volume adjusts in 5% steps for increase/decrease
- Voice control itself: "stop voice control" immediately disables the feature for the session
Commands must be spoken in English. The parser uses fuzzy matching, so variations like "turn on the radio" or "switch off the music" are recognised alongside the most direct phrasings.
Wake phrases
Choose between "Hello Frame" or "Hello Fravora" as your wake phrase. Both use fuzzy matching to tolerate slight variations in pronunciation. A configurable audible chime plays when the wake word is detected so you know the app is listening. The frame border turns blue during the listening window, green on a successful command, and red if the command is not recognised.
Setup: what the onboarding covers
Voice control is enabled after the initial onboarding that sets up your photo sources and first album. To activate it:
- Open Settings → Voice Control
- Accept the activation disclaimer (a one-time 3-second acknowledgement lock)
- Choose your wake phrase and enable the command categories you want
- The frame immediately starts listening for the wake phrase in the background
You can independently enable or disable the slideshow, audio, and volume command categories. If you only want volume control, you can leave the others off.
Getting reliable recognition
Because recognition depends on the device microphone, placement and environment matter more than they would with a dedicated smart speaker:
- Distance: Works most reliably within 2–3 metres of the device. Recognition drops off past that on most tablet hardware
- Background noise: Music playing from the frame itself competes with wake-word detection. Lower the volume if you are having difficulty triggering the wake phrase
- Tablet microphone quality: Mid-range and higher Android tablets generally have better microphones than entry-level devices. If recognition is poor, this is the most likely cause — not the software
- Command window: Set the command window to 5–7 seconds if you speak slowly or need time to form the command after the wake word
- Show recognized text: Enable the speech recognition overlay in Settings → Voice Control to see what the app hears — useful for diagnosing why a command is not being recognised
Best use cases for frame voice control
Kitchen: Frame at counter height, 1–2 metres away. Hands are occupied with cooking. "Hello Frame, stop audio" or "Hello Frame, increase volume" works well without touching anything.
Bedroom: Frame on a dresser or nightstand. "Hello Frame, pause slideshow" before sleep, or "Hello Frame, play music" when you wake up, without reaching for the device.
Home office: Frame on a desk or shelf. Quick volume or audio control without breaking focus.
Less suitable: Large open-plan rooms where the frame is more than 3–4 metres away, or rooms with significant ambient noise from TV, appliances, or other people talking.
